    2019 BALDWIN COUNTY TEACHER OF THE YEAR ANNOUNCED

    2019 Baldwin County Teacher of the Year Announced

    Superintendent Eddie Tyler is “Baldwin Proud” to announce the 2019 elementary and secondary Teachers of the Year. Please join us in congratulating Elementary Teacher of the Year Jennifer Susan Cardwell and Secondary Teacher of the Year Kathy Hughes.

    Jennifer Susan Cardwell is a second and sixth grade teacher at Orange Beach Elementary School. She has taught elementary education for 18 years with experience in second, third, fifth and sixth grades. She has been recognized as the Orange Beach Elementary Teacher of the Year 2018-2019, Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers 2003 and a Disney American Teacher Nominee in 2002. Ms. Cardwell did not always know she wanted to be a teacher, but once she began, she quickly realized that she would gladly live the rest of her life in the classroom. She believes teachers hold a powerful responsibility of educating the future citizens of our country, who will shape the world to come. She considers teaching a passion and a privilege.

    Kathy Hughes is the choral director and Music 101 instructor at Spanish Fort High School. She has taught music from kindergarten to twelfth grade and has been the chorus teacher at Spanish Fort since 2005. Today her program has five choirs with more than one hundred students from all walks of school life. She has been involved in the Alabama Vocal Association since 1986, serving in a variety of positions including President. Ms. Hughes says her message is simple: it is all about students. She says her students are what matters in the midst of everything else. She says we owe it to them and ourselves to improve the student-teacher experience. Her love of her students is what Ms. Hughes is most known for as well as her dedication to her school.

    The 2019 Teacher of the Year Banquet was held March 26 at the Grand Hotel in Point Clear. It is sponsored by the Baldwin County Education Coalition. Each school’s Teacher of the Year recipient was recognized.
