Thyme on Section
Transcript: It seems that every time I visit Fairhope, Alabama I fall in love with it a little bit more and find more reasons to return. On my last trip I found Thyme on Section. So…this the the kind of restaurant I really love. It’s owned by a young couple. They trained in a Michelin Star restaurant in Chicago, so they really cut their chops and learned amazing techniques and a lot about the restaurant business. But, born and raised in the Florida panhandle they could not resist the return home to the South. They’re now raising their family here, in charming Fairhope, and bringing something to this community that, I can’t imagine, everyone not loving.
Thyme on Section serves Southern specialties, but with really inventive twists, so it’s almost like revisiting dishes again. For example, as an appetizer or a small plate meal, ceviche tostada. It intersects two popular dishes: ceviche and Mexican string food. Like a taco with crispy tortilla, avocado puree, lime crema, and a mix of shrimp and local catch, which is Black Drum on this plate. For a fuller meal, I highly recommend the harissa shrimp. Incredible flavor in their version of the North African chili sauce. It is not too spicy; don’t worry, and coconut milk served over curried coos coos. You can enjoy those with Gulf shrimp, like you see here, or leave that off and it’s an outstanding vegan dish. Also recommended: the market fish. Mahi, in today’s version, with local beans, tarragon buttermilk sauce, and smoked pickled okra. It’s just enough familiar, totally Southern, and totally new and I applaud that. If you desire a classic steak, that will be delivered. The chef owners cooked in Chicago and that means they know how to cook steak. The genuine Southern Grandma bakes the desserts and that includes Coconut Cake, something I find irresistible and another part of the South I find myself nostalgic for.
With the coast so nearby and farmlands all around, Fairhope has so much to offer in terms of local products. It’s really celebrated here; rooted in the South but with lots of creativity and edginess that comes from their city training. I love Thyme on Section. You must try it and that’s my dining tip for you today.
